Faust: It's a Bit Of a Pain

aka Pain

Author : Jean-Hervé Péron

"Yes , I did write that tune, music and lyrics. Rudolf does a great solo with his guitar literally 'throwing up'... it's amazing though how this very poppy , conventionnal tune, opened the doors for you for further listenings of Faust. The harmonies are, like in all my songs, simple: E, A and the break B, A. The lyrics try to express the way I felt being in the new situation of having money and equipment and a large house and time (very beginning of Faust, prior to and including first halfyear or so in Wümme) and being so fucking privileged and so fucking inneficient and powerless... 'but it's alright with, yes it's alright with me'. Because, after all, who is REALLY satisfied and WHO would not SELL HIS MIND? That was a heavy conflict in my head which I tried to ignore or overplay or try to chanelize (canalize?) onto other situations or people but, sincerely, I meant ME, shit. It's was bit of a pain to be what I was! I believe we all have those moments of self-criticism and being in the position of reaching many people, I felt it was ok (in fact it is NECESSARY, it is a Verpflichtung - obligation) to speak for all, to spill yourself inside out like lots would like to do but can't. It helps, both myself and hopefully the listener. That's what songs are for.... With you HL , it helped you 'getting tuned' to us and that it returns does me good. Yes, that's what songs are all about: giving, giving." Jean-Hervé Péron, mail to the Faust list, 5th Dec 2004.

Lyrics

It's a bit of a pain
to be where I am
It's a bit of a pain
to be where I am
but it's all right now...
